Welcome to the Moe Norman Golf Academy

Moe Norman is recognized as one of golf's most colorful personalities, as well as perhaps the best ball-striker golf has ever known. Moe played with a unique single plane swing, a swing that countless "natural golfers" have found the easiest and most accurate in golf.

Look Who's Playing Natural Golf Now!

""Years ago I bought the Natural Golf video and watched it and then put it on the shelf and never did another thing with it.  My one day school with a Natural Golf Instructor Dutch (van Oestendorp)  was a complete reintroduction to the updated Single Plane swing fundamentals and that in and of itself was impressive!

"Having been a better than average athlete and starting golf at the age of 45, I expected golf to be similar to every other sport. Having excellent hand/eye coordination and innate athletic abilities, I should be playing bogey golf within a year and a 12 handicapper by age 50. I am sure you have guessed the outcome of that game plan already.

I became very frustrated, very quickly and could never achieve anywhere near the lofty goals I previously envisioned. At age 57,during August of '07, I enrolled in a Natural Golf school taught by Jim Lahey. I have since been following that initiation with regular lessons.

Simply stated, I have never enjoyed golf as much as I do now. Not because of lower scores, although they are a derivative, but more importantly, confidence. Confidence, that after a poor shot, I can execute a shot that will set the sail straight. That ability and confidence changes everything.

Jim has been instrumental in that  aspect, and demonstrates the communication skills, knowledge and patience necessary for any teacher, and is an outstanding ambassador for Natural Golf.

My best regards,

Rob Begy

Those of you who have the tendency to push the golf ball can probably trace it back to your conventional golf instruction, where you were taught to swing inside out through the ball. Natural Golfers moves the club on a square path, which can fix your pushing tendencies.

Single Plane Swing: A Natural Definition

By Ken Martin, PGA Professional & Natural Golf Director of Instruction

Natural Golf uses the shaft of the golf club to define the plane of the swing. We say a swing is single plane when the shaft angle at address matches the shaft angle at impact.

Ideally, the shaft would stay on this inclined plane throughout the entire swing; much like the shaft movement created by the golf club testing machine, Iron Byron, used by the USGA.  And, much like the shaft movement of a club as swung by Moe Norman.

By starting at address with your arms aligned with the clubshaft, you can swing back and forward on virtually the same swing path or on a single plane, we believe there is no simpler move in golf. It mimics the direct strike of driving a nail with a hammer, the way you hold the tool aligns your arm with the handle and a single plane motion is the most natural and most direct motion to use.

Jim Hardy defines a swing as "one plane" when the shoulders and lead arm are on the same plane at the top of the backswing. While he references a difference in setup between one and two plane swings, he does not use shaft angle as the criteria. Because the two methods use different criteria to define One or Single Plane, the swing mechanics of each method are not completely interchangeable.

Curing the Shanks

I have always had a good eye for a ball in all sports. I have never had a problem striking the ball cleanly until three weeks ago. I was getting on extremely well with the instruction on your site. The Monday before last I had a gross 82 which was good as I play off 19. I was striking my irons very cleanly and accurately. Then on the following Saturday I suddenly started shanking my irons and I cannot stop.

I put some marking tape on the blade and found I have started to strike the ball with the hosel where it meets the blade causing the ball to fly off at 45deg. or worse. I am not opening the club face or leading with the hosel. I am hitting my driver 280 - 320 off the tee very accurately but then shanking my irons off the fairway. It is destroying my game and my confidence is totally shot. Can you help?

Thanks! TheGeneral
